Doctors who use paper records could receive less money than usual from Medicare this year.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is informing 257,000 medical providers that they will lose their regular payments. The federal government intends to reward providers who go digital in an effort to enhance health care.

Doctors who rely on paper records will receive about 1 percent less than they typically do next year.

Electronic health records are expected to improve health care quality, which is why they are such a large government priority.

Before, health care providers that used electronic records received bonuses. Now, Medicare is phasing in a plan in which those that stick with paper will be hit with penalties.
