Records sharing law signed in Illinois

When records are stored electronically, company and government leaders can realize a number of different benefits, from improved information management to increased security practices. Doing so also allows for easier file sharing. Rather than having to search through books and looseleaf files, individuals can access records online.

This strategy may be of particular help in Illinois, where a law was recently signed calling for increased sharing of records. According to The Associated Press, Governor Pat Quinn recently signed HB 5602 into law on August 27, though it will go into effect in 2013.

The source reported this law will allow school officials and law enforcement agencies to share juvenile criminal records to keep educators and other school employees safe. The AP explained that the files cannot become part of public or school records, but the information can be shared among officials.

The Federal Records Centers, a division of the National Archives and Records Administration, reported that hosting documents electronically can help individuals in multiple locations access the same files without costly travel, printing and mailing expenses when the data must be shared.
