Staten Island high school students take final exams on tablets

A Staten Island high school has become the first private school in the country to conduct final exams on a tablet.

St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School last year launched a program called the "Seamless Online Learning Environment" in order to create a paperless classroom for students. The Staten Island Advance reported that six exams were taken on tablets and each was followed with a detailed, personalized report on the students' strong and weak areas.

"This is how they will learn when they enter college, and that is our job here at Sea, to provide them with all the competitive advantages necessary to succeed in college," said Rev. Michael P. Reilly, the school's principal.

Going paperless is beneficial in multiple ways. Take for instance, the number of students who took exams on tablets. If each of those students had a printed test before them the school would end up spending much more money on reams of paper and printer ink. Per ounce printer ink is more expensive than champagne, according to the New York Daily News.

In addition, the Japan Association for Language Teaching, distribution of materials becomes much easier when students can simply download their assignment or test instead of having to pass it out. When students have instant access to their tests, and any mistakes they make taking their exams can be instantly corrected, the time saved will add up.

In addition, the content management system installed on the tablets allows students to work in a totally secure testing environment. The tablets, in conjunction with the school's implementation of content management services has made life easier for students in addition to teachers.

"The tests go faster, and rather than handing in a ton of papers when you're finished you just hit submit and you're done," said Brandon Prato, a senior at St. St. Joseph by-the-Sea.
