University of Arizona holds forum proclaiming digitization benefits

Colleges and universities have been one of the driving forces behind the push for digitization in the last few years. Hosting documents or records online using electronic information management systems is often lucrative for schools, as researchers can access the data remotely, without having to travel to libraries.

Additionally, if a university has implemented digitization efforts, it could be good for the preservation of original documents. People won't be handling physical source documents, potentially damaging them with oils on their hands or other elements.

According to the Daily Wildcat, University of Arizona professor Peter Botticelli and assistant professor Patricia Montiel-Overall presented work on the benefits of the systems at a forum on October 31. They noted that today, most people digitize their own personal data, copying information onto social media platforms.

The pair reported that at the college, around 90,000 artifacts have been moved to the computer so far, the source detailed. There are plans in place to move more files online, as well as potential plans to look into which records aren't worth digitizing.
