IATA implements paperless solution for declaration needs

In an effort to streamline daily workflow and improve security and information organization and tracking, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recently implemented and tested a paperless solution for consignment security declaration.

According to Canadian Manufacturing, the IATA performed trials of its new Electronic Consignment Security Declaration in two countries, looking to replace paper based documentation for cargo and mail shipments. After months of testing to ensure the system processed, captured and document information in a reliable and consistent manner that meets air transport standards, the trails were declared successful, moving the IATA one step closer to creating an improved system for security and efficiency in cargo and mail air transportation.

"These successful trials will improve both security and efficiency. The e-CSD is a key element in securing the whole supply chain," Des Vertannes, IATA global head of cargo, told the news source. "By establishing that cargo and mail consignments have been correctly secured upstream of the airport and through transit points, bottlenecks and delays will be reduced. The endorsement of the U.K. Department of Transport and regulators in the Netherlands is very significant, as this paves the way for other key regulators to review and hopefully endorse the e-CSD in the months to come."

With improved solutions for reliably recording cargo shipment and security information, air transportation departments can implement document management systems as well to improve the organization, storage and usability of this information after it is initially recorded.
